A single mother who stole two duvet sets from a supermarket has been fined £50.

Gertrude Cele, 26, tried to get vouchers from Asda in Burnden by picking up two duvets, worth £70, and attempting to trade them in at customer services, Bolton magistrates heard yesterday.

When her attempt failed, mother of three Cele, who is on benefits, tried to walk out of the shop without paying.

Cele was caught on CCTV and arrested at her home in Monks Lane, Tonge Moor, where police found one of the duvets after a search.

She pleaded guilty to the shop lifting and was fined £50 as well as being ordered to pay £35 compensation, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Students chucking out unwanted bedding and kitchen items are sending them on to be recycled to help abandoned dogs and charities in Greater Manchester.

 Manchester City Council collected six van loads of duvets, sheets and blankets from students to give to animal homes in Harpurhey and Sale.

All cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils were collected in the council scheme and given to community charity groups.

The move to collect the unwanted goods was set by the council in May this year.

Other collections were 10 tonnes of paper, card and glass for recycling as well as 50 bags of textiles which were all given to charities.

Lisa Graham, from Manchester Dogs’ Home, said, “The duvets have been put to excellent use by our elderly and injured dogs that require a thicker, softer bed to support their injuries and joints.

“A big thank you from the dogs and staff at Manchester dogs home to all who donated their duvets.”

Councillor Nigel Murphy, from the council’s environment department, said he was impressed with the high levels of recycling and thanked the students for their help.
