We have celebrated a very special day here at Duvet and Pillow Warehouse which saw people gather in their plenty to see our brand new offices and leave with a their own Hungarian Goose Down Pillow!

Crowds of people turned up dressed up to the nines to join in the festivities of our wonderful occasion and to thank our loyal customers we gave away free pillows as a leaving gift.

Anne Milton, Guildford MP, very kindly cut the ribbon to launch the new offices, saying: “It was great to be asked to cut the ribbon for a local business that is doing so well.”

Friends and family came along and enjoyed lots of delicious food and drink whilst networking with others and listening to some poptastic music.

Charles Hunt, DAPW CEO, said: “The open day was a fantastic success. Thank-you to all those who came down to celebrate the special occasion with us; we have put a lot of time and money into the Duvet and Pillow offices and I would like to thank all the staff for their wonderful efforts.”

The new offices will enable us to maintain our continued growth with fantastic new space to expand into. It just shows how successful the company has become and how we are getting bigger and better than ever!

Come along and check out our rapidly expanding service at Duvet and Pillow Warehouse; and if you were one of the lucky partygoers who got to leave with a free Hungarian Goose Down Pillow why not complete the set with a Goose down duvet?

Experts on the Animal and Welfare (AHAW) Panel said that under current commercial conditions, plucking feathers, a way of collecting feathers, is unavoidable.

They recommend that a control system should be put in place to ensure that only moulting feathers are gathered from live geese.

The Working Group made use of information provided by stakeholders during a meeting held in May earlier this year; with experts from the feathers industry, in addition to information collected through a Public Consultation.

Findings from the opinion point out that brushing or combing live geese to collect moulting feathers causes no tissue damage, whereas pulling feathers out will result in pain. However, as different parts of the body moult at different times, some feathers may be unavoidably plucked when brushing and combing techniques are used.

Only feathers at the appropriate moulting phase should be gathered and that welfare-outcome indicators be put in place to ensure this is carried out in practice, such as by checking for the presence of skin tears or tissue on the feathers.

The main recommendation is that only ripe feathers should be removed from live geese. A control system should be in place to ensure this is carried out in practice or, alternatively, feathers should be removed by the person using a brushing or combing procedure so that only ripe feathers can be gathered. Grasping of feathers should be avoided.

Suffering should be avoided or minimised when catching and handling the geese, and geese should never be carried by the neck, legs or by one wing, be thrown or dropped, or be restrained by sitting on the neck or body of the bird. Operators should be aware of good animal handling methods and the differentiation between ripe and unripe feathers.

Sleep envy – as it is known – can turn a lovely lady into a less than likeable partner.

Figures show that 1 in 4 women admitted to deliberately waking up their partner because they are jealous they aren’t able to fall asleep as easy.

The most common revenge is to simple toss and turn until their sleep-eyed partner wakes up.

The next wake up tactic is the ‘accidental’ poke or prod in the ribs.

Others used less than subtle tactics such as chatting until they got a reply, making a loud noise and even turning on the light or television.

One in ten actually confessed to pinching their partner to wake up.

The sleeping envy confessions came about after a poll was conducted about women and their sleeping habits. Around 25 per cent of the women took up to an hour to drop off, while most men said they fell asleep in under ten minutes.

A third of women said that they felt frustration at watching their partners effortlessly fall asleep while they toss and turn, leading to unnecessary arguments before bed.

“Not being able to sleep can be frustrating enough, bout our survey shows that it is made worse when you are next to someone who is sound asleep,” the Daily Mail quoted for Silentnight, which carried out the poll, as saying.

“However this sleep envy phenomenon is actually doing more harm than good and will only prevent you from getting to sleep longer.

“Sleepless Brits should try tiring themselves out by reading or having a warm drink in another room, so as not to disturb their partners,” he added.

If you are struggling to sleep at night you may want to consider changing your bedding to a more cosier duvet and pillow to ensure you are getting the most out of each night’s sleep. From memory foam pillows to goose down quilts the Duvet and Pillow Warehouse website has some fantastic bedding supplies on their dedicated online store.

From the modern to the contemporary look, we love it all and make sure we are updated with the latest styles and trends in the home interior world.

However with the good comes the bad, with the beautiful comes the ugly and with the creative comes the way out there designs.

While scouring the World Wide Web, we come across these rather wacky designs that we think are fab!

Outside looking outside

Two Brazilian artist lived like this for four months during 2009. Their bedroom featured a bed, hammock, sofa, potted plant, chest of drawers situated on the outside wall of a building in Rio de Janeiro. Luckily the pair didn’t expose all of their daily living and scrambled over the wall to use the bathroom in the neighbouring art gallery.

Bed in a box

A Japanese company designed this folding bedroom to allow apartment owners to make more space around their home. Designed for urban living, the idea was to fold down necessary furniture without compromising on form or functionality.

The rather bizarre but very practical design is a great way to create more space in a room, however we are not too sure how comfy those mattresses will be and would definitely have to opt for a memory foam pillow or memory foam mattress topper to sleep on each night.

Mirror room

From Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin, this Mirror Room is diamond-shaped and lined top to bottom with mirrors created a kaleidoscope effect.

While rather cool and very retro, we are not too sure that waking up would be a easy task, especially having to see your own face in the morning staring back at you!

Whatever your style make sure that your room is super comfortable with a goose down duvet or memory mattress topper from Duvet and Pillow Warehouse.

The online duvet store has a wide selection of bedroom furnishings that are sure to suit your needs and requirements.

Do you like hard pillows or soft pillows? This might be a random question to ask but it may just depend on where you grew up!

Homemade pillows were used in ancient Egypt, medieval Europe and early America. In the mid 19th century, the Industrial Revolution and the evolving textile industry changed the way pillows were produced.

From homemade and hand-embroidered, they became machine-made. Bed pillows were stuffed with goose down or feathers to make them more cosy and comfortable.

However, in China pillows were very different. First they were smooth stones and later, by the late sixth century, they were rectangular blocks made of wood, jade, bronze, procelain or other ceramics. Most had a curved top surface for the head.

Porcelain pillows were made from the 10th to the 14th century, then were gradually replaced by pillows of other materials or even European-style stuffed pillows. Porcelain and other hard pillows were decorated with animals, plants, people and mountains and even geometric designs. Some had colourful glazes. Many were shaped like animals or small children.

Many collectors today do not realise that the decorated rectangles were pillows or headrests. They are sometimes called ‘opium pillows’ because opium users liked to lie on their sides using hard pillows. They claimed after smoking opium for a while, even a hard pillow felt ‘like a cloud.’

Nowadays it is hard to find the very old, hard pillows, but 19th-and 20th century replicas are available. The pillow shaped like a child is so popular as a decorative item that it is still being made.

As soon as our head hits the pillow we can feel ourselves drifting off into a peaceful sleep, not thinking about the thought of getting up for work the next day.

However, that isn’t how all of us feel.

Our bed is meant to be the safe haven of where you want to be after a night out, if you are ill, upset or feeling very tired, yet why do we fill it with rubbish bedding pillows that do nothing for our comfort and support?

Well at Duvet and Pillow Warehouse, we have come up with some top ideas to make sure that you know which pillows are the best to buy in order for you to get that perfect night’s sleep.

Feather pillows and down pillows, such as goose down pillows are usually the most comfortable but also the most expensive.

The question is, which one should you go for?

If you want to feel like you are resting on a cloud a 100 per cent down pillow is the way to go.

If a slightly firmer feel is preferable, go for a blend of feathers and down.

If you are looking for that complete firm pillow then 100 per cent feather pillow is highly recommended.

From time to time, bedding pillows do get dirty and need to be regularly washed to reduce dust mites and other bacterial like dead skin. Most bedding pillows can be washed in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and dried in the tumble dryer on a low heat. Some people suggest putting a tennis ball or pair of CLEAN trainers in the machine too to help beat out any clumps that may have formed during washing.

And if your pillows aren’t dirty but just need fluffing, place them in the dryer on low heat with a damp washcloth.

Many people find that they have a more peaceful and relaxing night’s sleep but don’t know how to look after them to help them keep their shape.

Feather pillows require more care than normal bedding pillows and Duvet and Pillow Warehouse have come up with some great steps to help you look after those fluffy pillows.

1. Washing Machine

Don’t be afraid to use your washing machine to wash your feather pillows. Place them in your washing machine two at a time in order to keep the load even and place the setting on either cold or warm.

2. Detergent

Don’t over do on the detergent and reduce the amount you use with the feather pillows.

3. Use trainers to reshape

This may be a funny way of cleaning your feather pillows, but it does work. Make sure they are clean (obviously) and add them to the dryer when placing your pillows in to dry. This will reduce the lumps and maximise the fluff of pillows as the trainers gently beat the pillows as they tumble.

Make sure the dryer is on the lowest setting and stop it every so often to manually fluff them and then place back inside the dryer. Feather pillows generally need more time to be cleaned and dried than other bedding pillows, but the time spent on them will be worth it in the end.

5. Dry Cleaners

And if you really don’t trust yourself to do it right or don’t have the time to get it done, you can send them to the dry cleaners and they can do all the hard work for you.

If you are looking to buy feathered pillows or any type of bedding pillows visit Duvet and Pillow Warehouse today.

Feathered pillows have been around for centuries but do you think that one deserves to be in your home?

We at Duvet and Pillow Warehouse have compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages about feathered pillows and whether they will be of use to you.

Advantages

Feather pillows are known for being soft, cuddly and flexible. They mould to your head and neck reasonably well and provide more support than down. The pillows are also designed to provide head and neck support where and when you need it by scrunching up the pillow into a position that suits you.

They are known as the most durable pillows around and will last for many years with reasonable care. Feathered pillows can usually be machine washed or dried. They are considered a strong value because they often last so long.

Feather pillows weigh very little, in fact they usually weigh no more than a pound or two.

Disadvantages

After a while feather pillows can sink to some degree and don’t often maintain significant support throughout the night.

From this, you many find that you are constantly adjusting the pillow, fluffing and shaking it during the night.

The hard quills of the feathers can often be noticed through the case and can sometimes poke through. You many also notice a crunching-like noise when the pillows are compressed because the feathers can contain hard parts or because the pillows have a plastic layer to prevent the feathers from poking through.

Also, feather pillows are known to have an odour due to the chemicals used to sanitise the feathers.

Well everyone loves a bit of chicken and this pillow is no exception! We would definitely advise you to keep it out of the dogs way though, we can only imagine you coming home from work to a bedroom full off feathers! Luckily we don’t mean a live chicken’s ones!
