Having consistency at bedtime can help you get a better night’s sleep to ensure that you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face the day.

Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol can all have major effects on our sleep and should be avoided in the hours before you go to sleep. Caffeine will either prevent someone from falling asleep, or stop you from reaching all the different periods of sleep. Each period of sleep has a different effect on the body, so missing out one will leave you feeling groggy in the morning. Nicotine works in the same way as caffeine.

Although alcohol can make you sleepy at first, you will usually wake up about 4 hours after you’ve nodded off, meaning your sleep is also interrupted. Eating and drinking to close to bedtime can also affect your sleep.

The experts say that having the right bedroom environment is also vital to ensure we sleep well. Your bedroom should be dark and of a comfortable temperature, and you should make sure you choose comfortable bedding.

You should make sure you choose bedding which suits you, whether you prefer cotton or silk pillowcases, goose feather or microfibre duvets or a firm or soft mattress to ensure you get the best possible sleep. A comfortable mattress is also a must, but if you can’t afford to replace yours, a mattress topper could be the ideal solution.
